Director of Communications Position

This position plays a critical role in developing and executing communications strategies to raise public awareness of Grace Presbytery’s ministry and mission.  This involves effective communication to all constituents and the public in general, and builds connection and relationship among its member churches.  Essential to the position is a demonstrated record of success in developing and executing communications strategies, including setting and achieving measurable annual and long-term strategic goals.  Experience in public relations is desired but not required.

The Director will work in partnership with other staff in Grace Presbytery and Council leadership to develop and implement a strategic communications plan for various aspects of Grace Presbytery’s mission.  This role serves as a strategist and advisor to Grace Presbytery staff and key leadership.  S/he will be a proactive initiator of Grace Presbytery’s communication needs, respond to communication requests from colleagues as well as focus and prioritize responses congruent with organization and communications strategic plans and resources.  S/he will manage multiple projects and communications deliverables consistent with mission direction and expected timelines, in addition to successfully handling unanticipated requests.

Required qualifications:

  • Active engagement in a Protestant church, preferably with experience in and understanding of church polity.
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 3-5 years of strategic communications experience
  • Extensive strategic communications planning skills
  • Strong communication, analytical and strategic mindset
  • Public relations agency experience desired
  • Detail-oriented and strategy-driven
  • Must have a broad vision with ability to set short and long-term planning goals in line with larger organizational priorities
  • Strong critical thinking abilities
  • Demonstrated collaborative spirit and leadership style
  • Experienced writing and editing skills; ability to produce clear, concise materials on tight deadlines
  • Ability to think strategically and work effectively with others in a team environment
  • Able to develop and move projects forward


Roles and responsibilities

  • Develops an executive communications strategy for Grace Presbytery
  • Develops multi-faceted communications plans, which include message development, web presence, advocacy and social media to educate and motivate target audiences.
  • Provides strategic communications analysis to develop multi-year communications planning including developing communications goals, establishing priorities, messaging and determining  success measurements
  • Provides strategic counsel and evaluation to other staff and elected members as needed
  • Works with others to develop strategic plans for new initiatives as they arise, ensuring those priorities
  • Ensures all new and traditional communications work is aligned with and actively advances the priorities of Grace presbytery
  • Remains current with new and emerging strategies, technologies and tools that can improve the strategic communications efforts of the ministry areas
  • Supports external media relations


Other qualifications

  • Experience working in a religious or charitable organization
  • Experience in developing and executing integrated communications
  • Superior writing and editing skills with the ability to translate complex and/or sensitive information into easy-to-understand context
  • Strong project management, time management and prioritization skills.
  • Understanding and sensitivity of working with diverse constituencies and volunteers
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight
  • Demonstrated ability of gaining the trust and confidence of leadership in handling confidential and sensitive matters with discretion
  • Ability to maintain confidences
  • Self-motivated with the ability to thrive under pressure and meet multiple deadlines
  • Handles conflict professionally in a constructive and positive manner
  • Must have strong organizational skills, be detail-oriented and possess the ability to be proactive and follow projects through to completion

  • To Presbytery Council, committees and commissions as appropriate
  • To the Presbytery at large as a resource for communication and interpreting and promoting the Presbytery’s story and that of its churches and related activities
  • To staff at the General Assembly/Presbyterian Mission Agency
  • To media locally, regionally and nationally through PCUSA and secular


Employer Paid Compensation/benefits

Salary range:  $60-65,000 full-time
Medical and pension benefits available through PCUSA Board of Pensions – employer paid coverage for individual and family
Four weeks vacation, 2 weeks continuing education

Does not supervise other full-time staff
Accountable to General Presbyter
